How I Helped Tom McBride Stop Dreading Video and Start Recruiting Agents

By Jack Rossberger in Coaches Corner on Feb 20, 2026

Jack and tom

I want to tell you a story about my client, Tom McBride, and how I helped him turn be more comfortable in front of the camera.

Tom runs a recruiting account with us. He has about eight agents on his team, and his goal is simple: attract strong agents who want to grow under his leadership.

Before working with us, video wasn't really part of his identity. Over the past few years, he had posted a handful of videos, but the camera quality wasn't great, the audio wasn't great, and more importantly, he didn't look fully comfortable. You could tell he was thinking about the video instead of thinking about the message.

And when you're recruiting agents, professionalism matters.

His biggest obstacle was...

Video marketing in general, but specifically looking and feeling confident on camera.

The camera quality was inconsistent. The microphone quality wasn't strong. But the biggest issue wasn't technical—it was mental.

Video was taking up too much mental capital. Instead of focusing on how to attract agents, he was worried about how he looked, how he sounded, and whether it felt polished enough.

That hesitation shows up on camera.

My solution to the obstacle was...

We didn't assume one format would magically fix it. We tested.

First, we tried an interview-style approach where I asked him questions and he responded naturally. It helped a little, but it still wasn't getting him to where I knew he could be.

Then we experimented with a teleprompter.

Instead of hitting record immediately, I told him: "Let's not record yet. Just read through it once. Get messy. Get comfortable. Internalize it."

The first run-through was rough. That's normal.

But the second time through? Completely different.

Once he internalized the script, his delivery changed. He wasn't reading anymore. He was communicating.

We also upgraded his technical setup without asking him to buy anything new. He already had a high-quality Yeti microphone sitting on his desk. So I had him join Riverside on his computer to capture clean audio from the Yeti, use his phone for video, mute the phone mic, and then we spliced it together in post-production.

Simple adjustment. Big difference.

Now the videos look and sound professional.

The Outcome for My Client Was…

Tom is no longer nervous on camera.

Video isn't draining his mental energy anymore. We can hop on and knock out two strong recruiting videos in about 30 minutes.

And once that friction was gone, we expanded.

We started incorporating agent success stories—interviewing agents on his team about how joining improved their careers. I recently filmed one, and we're continuing that series.

Now our monthly strategy calls aren't about surviving video shoots. They're about:

  • Follow-up strategy
  • Warm outreach
  • Recruiting conversations
  • Growing the team intentionally

Tom has told me multiple times that he's getting compliments on how polished and professional his videos look now. That kind of feedback matters when you're trying to attract talent.

What Tom says about working with me...

I think Tom would say I met him where he was.

We didn't force one style. We tried different approaches until we found what fit him. I adapted to his comfort level, but I also pushed when needed.

There's collaboration, mutual respect, and clear direction.

That's what made the difference.

What to Do Next…

If you're already a client and you dread your video shoots, that's a sign we may need to adjust your process.

You might be a teleprompter person, an interview-style person, a talking-points person, or someone who just needs a dry run before recording. We can figure that out together.

Schedule a strategy call, and let's rethink how you approach video so it stops feeling heavy and starts feeling efficient.

If you worked with us in the past and want to get back into video, we'll help you ease back in without making it overwhelming.

And if you're considering hiring us, this is what it looks like to have a director and marketing coach guide you step by step so your videos support your actual business goals.

Video shouldn't drain you. It should support growth.
